What Is Grounding?
Grounding — also called earthing — refers to direct physical contact with the Earth's surface: walking barefoot on grass, sand, or soil, or using conductive grounding products that replicate this connection indoors.
The Earth's surface carries a virtually limitless supply of free electrons. When you make direct contact, these electrons flow into your body, neutralizing positively charged free radicals that drive inflammation and oxidative stress.
The Physics of Grounding
The Earth maintains a negative electrical charge relative to the atmosphere. This charge is continuously replenished by lightning strikes (approximately 100 per second globally) and solar radiation. When you stand barefoot on the Earth, you become electrically connected to this vast reservoir of electrons.
Modern life has largely disconnected us from this natural electrical exchange. Rubber-soled shoes, elevated beds, and concrete floors all act as insulators, preventing the flow of electrons between our bodies and the Earth.
What the Research Shows
Inflammation
A landmark study published in the *Journal of Inflammation Research* (2015) found that grounding significantly reduced inflammatory markers and pain in subjects with chronic inflammatory conditions. Thermographic imaging showed visible reductions in inflammation within 30 minutes of grounding.
Sleep Quality
A double-blind study found that grounding during sleep normalized cortisol secretion patterns, leading to improved sleep quality, reduced nighttime pain, and better daytime energy levels.
Cardiovascular Health
Research published in the *Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine* found that grounding reduced blood viscosity — a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease — by improving the zeta potential of red blood cells, causing them to repel each other and flow more freely.
Stress & Autonomic Nervous System
Grounding has been shown to shift the autonomic nervous system from sympathetic (fight-or-flight) to parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) dominance, reducing stress hormones and promoting recovery.
Grounding Products for Indoor Use
For most people, spending hours barefoot outdoors isn't practical. Grounding products use conductive materials (silver-threaded fabrics, carbon-infused mats) connected to the Earth via a grounding wire plugged into the ground port of a standard electrical outlet.
At Mana BioHealth, we carry a range of grounding products including:
- Grounding mats for desk use or under your feet while working
- Grounding bed sheets for all-night earthing during sleep
- Grounding pillowcases for head and neck grounding
- Grounding bands for targeted use on wrists or ankles
Who Benefits Most from Grounding?
Grounding appears particularly beneficial for individuals with:
- Chronic inflammatory conditions (arthritis, fibromyalgia)
- Sleep disorders
- High stress or anxiety
- Cardiovascular risk factors
- Chronic fatigue
Getting Started
The simplest way to start grounding is to spend 20–30 minutes barefoot on natural ground daily. For indoor grounding, our grounding mats and sheets provide a convenient alternative that can be used while sleeping, working, or relaxing.
